Planning for Sanford Dam Permanent Repairs Underway; Temporary Stabilization to Take Place Soon

PLANNING FOR SANFORD DAM PERMANENT REPAIRS UNDERWAY; TEMPORARY STABILIZATION TO TAKE PLACE SOON

City staff met with representatives of North Carolina Dam Safety to begin planning on the projected fifteen (15) months it will take to design and construct repairs to Sanford Dam and Alton Lennon Drive.  The City is seeking permission from NC Dam Safety to utilize the “design build” construction method to hopefully reduce the projected time period even further.  The City is currently awaiting meetings with FEMA to have the project approved as part of the damages resulting from Hurricane Florence and thus the costs for design and repair being reimbursable to the City.  Temporary dam stabilization will be undertaken in the near future to prevent any additional erosion of the banks that occurred with the breach from Hurricane Florence.
