The City of Boiling Spring Lakes reminds community members to begin preparing for the 2025 Atlantic hurricane season, which goes from June 1 to November 30. Forecasters with NOAA's National Weather Service predict above-normal hurricane activity in the Atlantic basin this year. NOAA is forecasting a range of 13 to 19 total named storms (winds of 39 mph or higher). Of those, 6-10 are forecast to become hurricanes (winds of 74 mph or higher), including 3-5 major hurricanes (category 3, 4, or 5 - with winds of 111 mph or higher). NOAA has a 70% confidence in these ranges.
Preparing for Hurricane Season
Remember, no two disasters are the same. The most effective way to protect you and your family is to be prepared.
- Make a Plan. Your family may not be together when a disaster occurs. Plan how you will contact one another and reconnect if separated. Establish a family meeting place. Know your evacuation route, shelter plan, and who your emergency contacts are. Discuss how you will receive emergency alerts, where you will keep important documents, and plans for your pets and animals. Discuss what you will keep in your emergency preparedness kit, and be sure to consider any specific needs in your household. Visit https://www.ready.gov/plan for more information.
- Prepare an Emergency Kit. When preparing an emergency kit, it is recommended to prepare three to seven days of water, non-perishable food, and medicine for each person and pet in your home. Visit https://www.ready.gov/kit for more information.
- Stay Informed. It's important to plan for multiple ways to receive information. Get the latest updates from the National Weather Service, tune into local news and radio stations, sign up for Code-Red and follow the City of Boiling Spring Lakes and Brunswick County on social media, sign up for the Ready Brunswick Emergency Notification System, and sign up for email notifications from Brunswick County at https://www.brunswickcountync.gov/866/Notifications-Alerts.
- Know your evacuation zone and what routes you would take if you had to evacuate.
- Check your insurance policies for flooding or natural disasters. Flood insurance, which is not normally part of homeowner's insurance policies, is encouraged for North Carolina Residents.
