General Statement of Duties
An employee in this class performs intermediate semiskilled work installing, maintaining, and repairing of a variety of stormwater related projects, and other public works activities.
Distinguishing Features of the Class
Employees in the class will be engaged in a variety of work associated with stormwater collection systems, ditches, and retention systems. Work includes maintenance and repair of storm water systems, open ditches, and related infrastructure. Work involves ensuring that proper tools, equipment, and supplies are taken to the work site. This employee is subject to working in outside environments including extreme hot and cold weather, and to work hazards including loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, exposure to chemicals, fumes, odors, dust, mists and oils; to include bothersome animals. This employee must exercise judgement and initiative in carrying out assignments. Work is performed under supervision of a Stormwater Management Supervisor and is inspected for compliance with instructions, conformance to established standards, quality and productivity and adherence to schedules and priorities.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Responds to drainage complaints; develops, coordinates, and implements solutions to correct problems.
- Conducts erosion control inspections of all construction projects in the city; ensures compliance with ordinances.
- Follows direction of the City Stormwater Engineer/Lead Stormwater Operator in all field operations.
- All other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Knowledge of traffic laws governing equipment operation.
- Knowledge of the practice of operating light to heavy equipment.
- Knowledge of the occupational hazards related safety precautions for large equipment in traffic and in tight locations and around overhead and underground utilities.
- Ability to understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Ability to deal courteously with the public.
- Ability to train and mentor coworkers.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with coworkers, supervisors, and the public.
- Ability to perform heavy manual labor as necessitated by work assignments.
Physical Requirements
- Must be able to physically perform the basic life functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, standing walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, grasping, talking, and hearing.
- Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently; and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
- Must possess visual acuity to operate equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, and power tools.
Desirable Education and Experience
Graduation from high school and a minimum of 2 years of experience in equipment operation; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Additional Duties
Assists in other departmental functions as needed.
Performs related duties as required.
Salary Range
$39,759 - $59,639
