DESCRIPTION

Under occasional supervision, inspects building construction and existing structures for compliance with applicable building (building, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical) and related codes and ordinances. Provides technical interpretation of codes and regulations as needed. Prepares and maintains all required documentation. Employee must exercise considerable tact, courtesy, and firmness in dealing with contractors, property owners, and the general public. Performs related work as required. 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

Review permit applications and plans for completeness and compliance. Perform multi-trade inspections on residential and non-residential buildings in the building, plumbing, mechanical and electrical trades. Prepare documentation of approval or defects of inspections. Coordinate and provide interpretations of the codes for contractors, designers, business owners, residents, and homeowners. Enforce local ordinances. Attend continuing education classes as required by the North Carolina Code Qualifications Board. Perform other duties as assigned. 

QUALIFICATIONS

Technical school diploma supplemented by one to seven years of experience in building inspections. Standard Level I certifications in all trades required (building, plumbing, mechanical, electrical). Must possess a valid NC driver's license. 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Tasks involve the ability to exert moderate physical effort in light work, typically involving some combination of climbing and balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, and the lifting, carrying, pushing and/or pulling of objects and materials of moderate weight. Must possess the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data and figures, operate a computer terminal, operate a motor vehicle, perform field site inspections, and use measurement devices. 

SALARY & CLASSIFICATION

$22.12 - $33.19/hour - FLSA Non-Exempt
