The 2026 update of the Southeastern N.C. Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan is officially underway. The Hazard Mitigation Plan is intended to promote sound public policy designed to protect citizens, critical facilities, infrastructure, private property, and the natural environment. Section 322 of the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires local governments to develop an all-hazards mitigation plan in order to be eligible to receive future Hazard Mitigation Grant Program funds and other disaster-related assistance funding and requires that plans be updated and adopted within a five-year cycle. The city adopted the current SENC Hazard Mitigation Plan on February 2, 2021.
