Hazard mitigation is any sustained action taken to reduce or eliminate the long-term risk to human life and property from hazards. Mitigating hazard impacts on existing development within the City, and ensuring future development is carried out in a way that doesn't increase our vulnerability, is best done through strong plans, policies, and procedures. Hazard mitigation techniques include prevention, property protection, natural resource protection, structural projects, emergency services, and public education and awareness.
Section 322 of the Federal Disaster Mitigation Act of 2000 requires local governments to develop an all-hazards mitigation plan in order to be eligible to receive future Hazard Mitigation Grant Program Funds and other disaster-related assistance funding, and requires the plan to be updated and adopted within a five-year cycle.
The Hazard Mitigation Plan promotes sound public policy designed to protect citizens, critical facilities, infrastructure, private property, and the natural environment. This can be achieved by increasing public awareness, documenting resources for risk reduction and loss prevention, and identifying activities to guide the City toward developing a safer, more sustainable community.
