HEAVY EQUIPMENT OPERATOR

NATURE OF WORK

This is manual work in the operation of several types of power construction equipment used in street and storm water maintenance to include road grading, pavement patching, storm water ditching, Right of Way mowing, hydro-seeding, and mosquito control. Employees will be required to operate a variety of equipment, to perform equipment repairs and maintenance, and manual duties. Supervision is received from the Public Works Streets Supervisor.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Operates a rubber tire backhoe, rubber tire excavator, mini excavator, tandem axle dump truck, commercial tractor with boom (side-arm) mower, and bush hog; washes, services and makes minor adjustments and repairs to assigned equipment; reports need for maintenance or repair of equipment to supervisor; participates in maintenance, construction and laboring work as directed; performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION:

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of standard construction equipment; knowledge of the hazards of operation and of appropriate safety rules and regulations; knowledge of traffic laws, ordinances and rules governing equipment operation; knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions applicable to laboring work; ability to detect needed mechanical work and make necessary minor adjustments to understand and carry out oral instructions and to work independently in the performance of regular duties; skilled in the operation of assigned equipment.

Training and Experience

Graduation from a standard high school or GED; two (2) years’ experience in the operation of heavy construction equipment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

Special Requirements

Valid North Carolina Class B Commercial Driver License required for greater than 26,000 lb loads.

Mosquito Control Spraying License (preferred)

CLASSIFICATION:    Mechanical. FLSA Non-Exempt.
