NATURE OF WORK

Performs custodial work at City Buildings and related facilities, maintains cleaning equipment, maintains supply inventory, and performs related work as assigned. Works independently under the general supervision of the Buildings and Grounds Senior Maintenance Technician with work checked by spot inspections or as a result of complaints.

EXAMPLES OF DUTIES

Collects and disposes of trash; dusts and damp mops floors; cleans window blinds; dusts furniture and equipment. Strips, scrubs, buffs and refinishes floors; shampoos carpet. Moves equipment and furniture (see Physical Requirements below) for proper cleaning and replaces furniture. Cleans assigned areas with the use of assigned materials and equipment. Sanitizes all surfaces. Cleans walls, windows, furniture, baseboards and other items to maintain a clean, safe environment for citizens, visitors and staff. Seeks out areas requiring cleaning beyond assigned areas; takes initiative to complete the task. Helps to set up and break down buildings or rooms for activities and special events. Performs tasks in accordance with all federal, state, and local guidelines. Contributes to the team; exhibits professionalism with customers, fellow employees and others. Performs other duties as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of the materials, methods and equipment typically used in janitorial/custodial work; skill in the use of equipment and materials commonly used in building cleaning activities; ability to perform a variety of routine and physically demanding janitorial/custodial tasks in the cleaning of buildings and equipment; ability to deal tactfully with the general public; ability to understand and effectively carry out oral and written assignments.

Physical Requirements

This is medium work requiring the exertion of 50 pounds of force occasionally, up to 20 pounds of force frequently, and up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Work requires climbing, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, fingering, grasping, and repetitive motions. Vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels. The worker is subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, vibration, hazards, atmospheric conditions, and oils. The worker may be exposed to bloodborne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment.

Training and Experience

Graduation from a standard high school or GED; three (3) months experience in janitorial/custodial work desired.

Special Requirements

Valid North Carolina driver license.

PAY GRADE:   1 (Starting Hourly Rate of $11.00/hr. with a thirty (30) hour workweek estimated
